About the Scholarship

On 16th July 2002, the NSW Aboriginal Land Council made a grant to Charities Aid Foundation to launch its new scholarship program for Aboriginal students who wish to study finance and commerce disciplines in tertiary institutions in NSW.

The aim of the program is to increase the number of Indigenous Australians considering career options in these fields.

A decision was recently taken to broaden the scope of the scholarships to other disciplines such as Information Technology, Community Welfare/ Services Community Management, Health/ Medicine, Tourism, Law, Science, Architecture, Engineering, Human Resources.

The program is named after former Bondi Junction resident, Freddy Fricke, who donated his property to the NSW Aboriginal Land Council upon his death in 2000. The proceeds from the sale of this property, which totalled $537,000, have been set aside by NSWALC as a capital base for an Account.

Charities Aid Foundation, (CAF Community Fund) operates this program which has already attracted donations from both government and commerce sectors.

About Freddy Fricke
With no family of his own, Frederick Thomas Fricke (known as "Freddy" to his friends in Bondi Junction) wished to pass on his assets to an underdog in contemporary Australia. On his death in April 2000, Freddy Fricke generously bequeathed his home to NSWALC, as a token of financial support to the Aboriginal people of New South Wales, to assist them in their future objectives and goals. The proceeds of the sale of his home forms the $537 000 seed funding for the scholarship grants.

Named in honour of his meaningful gesture toward Aboriginal reconciliation in Australia, the scholarship Account sets to realise Freddy Fricke's final wishes and to actively promote and foster Aboriginal education, self determination and economic independence.
