NSWALC MOURNS PASSING OF ABORIGINAL LEADER
The NSW Aboriginal Land Council today expressed its sadness at the passing
of Aboriginal leader and activist Pat Dixon.
"Pat was a highly respected member of the Aboriginal community,
not just in her own local area of northern NSW, but right across the State,"
NSWALC Chairman Rod Towney said today.
"Indeed, she'll be sorely missed by the non-Aboriginal community
too. As a former Deputy Mayor of Armidale and as Vice President of the
Local Government Association of NSW, Pat worked for everyone, black and
white. She was a great believer in reconciliation and she had the respect
and confidence of the entire community."
NSWALC's Councillor for the Northern Tablelands Tom Briggs also paid
tribute to Pat Dixon, describing her as an old and trusted friend.
"I've known Pat for about 30 years and while she'll no doubt be
remembered as a great civic leader, she should also be recognised for
her efforts to improve the health and welfare of Aboriginal people,"
Councillor Briggs said.
"In addition to her affiliation with Aboriginal medical and health
services, Pat had a long and productive association with the Land Council
network. She achieved so much in her 59 years. The tragedy is she was
still in her prime and I have no doubt there was more she wanted to do."
"On a personal level, Pat's compassion and understanding will be
sorely missed. She provided a shoulder for many," Councillor Briggs
said. "Pat was a good listener and shared the concerns of her community,
doing her best to offer support and guidance where she could. Her death
is a great loss to us all."
