NSWALC CONGRATULATES "LIVING LEGEND" - CATHY FREEMAN

The New South Wales Aboriginal Land Council today extended its warmest congratulations to Cathy Freeman, named a "Living Legend" by the Australian Institute of Sport.

"Cathy Freeman's legendary status as an athlete is not news to the Aboriginal community. Indeed, she's a sporting hero to all Australians, and that's been acknowledged by her induction into the AIS Living Legends Gallery," NSWALC Chairman Rod Towney said. "We're glad to see she continues to receive the recognition and support she so richly deserves.

"When Cathy defied sporting authorities to carry the Aboriginal flag around the athletics track years ago, she cemented her place in the hearts of Aboriginal Australians. Then, her spectacular performance in Sydney just last year, made us all the more proud.

"But we must remember Cathy's contribution to this nation isn't confined to the sporting arena.

"It was truly gratifying to see both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians join together to cheer her on at the Sydney Olympics. Cathy has done more than many, for reconciliation and understanding between black and white. She's an inspiration to Australians, and indeed to people around the world.

"She's also a tremendous role model for Aboriginal youth, showing them just what they can achieve through sheer hard work and dedication.

"The NSW Aboriginal Land Council warmly congratulates Cathy, and we thank her too, for her significant contribution to this country," Chairman Towney concluded.
