INTERIM CEO APPOINTED TO NSWALC

The NSW Aboriginal Land Council yesterday appointed Mr Daniel Rose as its interim Chief Executive Officer.

A Gamilaroi man from Walgett, Mr Rose began his career in the public service in 1975 and has held many senior positions in Aboriginal affairs including the office of Chief of Staff to the Commonwealth Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, State Director of the NSW Department of Aboriginal Affairs and the Director of Aboriginal Heath at the NSW Health Department. Mr Rose was also the Australian Government Adviser with the special committee at the International Labor Organisation's 7th Annual Conference in Geneva in May 1988.

After leaving the public service in 1996, Mr Rose set up a consultancy firm focussing on the areas of Aboriginal health, employment, housing and infrastructure.

NSWALC Chairperson, Les Trindall, said that Mr Rose's vast experience would assist NSWALC in delivering high standards of leadership to the administration and stability until a new, permanent CEO was appointed.

"While our investments are looking more healthy, we are still eager to push ahead with a review of the organisation to allow our staff to improve service delivery to the 120 Local Aboriginal Land Councils (LALCs) of our network. I am confident that Mr Rose's appointment will bring a high level of stability to the organisation during the review process," Chairperson Trindall said.

Mr Rose said he would focus on working with the Council to provide day to day management of the NSWALC network and assist it in focussing on the important issues affecting the organisation and the Aboriginal people of the State.

"It is especially important we work together right now to focus our efforts in assisting the LALCs to comply with the new Amendments to the NSW Aboriginal Land Rights Act, which will assist the organisation to deliver a high level of transparency and accountability," Mr Rose said.

"The NSW Aboriginal Land Rights Act represents the greatest transfer of rights to Indigenous people in Australia and possibly the world. We are all eager to work together to use the strengths of the Act and the NSWALC network to make this legislation work for Aboriginal people of this State."

Chairperson Trindall said the Council and the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Dr Andrew Refshauge, would continue to work together to deliver effective outcomes for the Aboriginal people of NSW.
