NEW CHAIRPERSON FOR NSWALC

Councillor Les Trindall has been elected the new Chairperson of the NSW Aboriginal Land Council following the resignation of former Chairperson, Rod Towney, at an extraordinary meeting of Council today.

Councillor Towney said his decision to resign was due to personal reasons.

"I would like to thank the people of NSW Aboriginal Land Council network for supporting me and specifically the people of my region, the Central Region. Unfortunately, personal issues have made it difficult for me to continue in such a demanding role as Chairperson. I will, however, continue to represent my people within the Central Region as their elected Councillor," Cr Towney said.

"I would also like offer my congratulations to Councillor Trindall on his election as Chairperson."

The new Chairperson, Les Trindall, was elected Councillor for the North West Region in the 1999 election. While a first term Councillor, his association with the region and the Land Council network dates back another 11 years, during which time he served as North West Region Branch Manager at Coonamble and Chairperson of the Region.

"I would like to thank Cr Towney for his commitment to the Aboriginal Land Rights movement as Chairperson for the last two and half years and acknowledge the good work and progress the Land Council has made under his leadership, " Chairperson Trindall said.

"I would also like to give a commitment to the Aboriginal people of NSW to carry on the good work that has been achieved by the current Council."
