RECORD NUMBER OF VOTERS REGISTERED FOR NSWALC ELECTION
A record number of voters are expected to turnout for the forthcoming election for the state’s peak Aboriginal organisation, the New South Wales Aboriginal Land Council.
A major enrolment drive in recent months has seen more than 16-and-a-half thousand Aboriginal people across New South Wales register to be eligible to vote in the May 19 poll.
The poll will see one full time member elected to the New South Wales Aboriginal Land Council from each of nine regions across the State.
Certified voting rolls for the nine new regions were delivered last week to the State Electoral Commission, which will conduct the vote.
Those rolls contained more than 16-and a half thousand registered voting members from 116 Local Aboriginal Land Councils across the state---the highest number of voting members ever recorded.
It is a tremendous achievement given that LALC membership and voting are entirely voluntary.
Nominations for the NSWALC election open this Friday, March 30 and close on Monday April 23.
LALC membership underpins the aspirations and decision making of land council business throughout New South Wales.
The voting membership base has established a solid foundation for a record turnout on May 19 and for the consequent elections for Local Aboriginal Land Councils later this year.
The May 19 poll will be the first NSWALC election since December, 1999 when just over six thousand voters participated.
