Monday 7 May, Media ReleaseLAST CHANCE TO DELIVER POSTAL VOTES IN NSW ABORIGINAL ELECTIONAboriginal people who cannot get to a local polling booth for the NSW Aboriginal Land Council’s statewide election on May 19 can still cast their vote if they act quickly. They can apply for and obtain a postal vote this week. NSWALC’s Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Scott, said all postal vote applications must be lodged with the NSW Electoral Commission by 5 PM on this Friday, 11 May, 2007. “It is vitally important that as many as eligible voters in the Land Council network as possible cast their votes on May 19 – the first NSWALC statewide election in eight years,” Mr Scott said. “We have been very impressed by the strong support for the election already demonstrated by the NSW Aboriginal community with Local Aboriginal Land Council voting memberships increasing from 6000 to more than 16,500 in recent months,” he added. “Voting members of the Aboriginal land council network now need to follow through and make sure their voices are loudly heard in support of self-determination and the advancement of their rights. “Even if voting members are away from their region or unable to attend a polling booth on 19 May they can still have their say by casting a postal vote.” Application forms must be completed and signed and posted or faxed to the Returning Officer at the Electoral Commission by 5 PM on Friday. The address for completed postal vote applications is: The Returning Officer, NSW Aboriginal Land Council Election, PO Box 693, GROSVENOR PLACE 1220 and the fax number is (02) 9290 5939. Completed applications can also be hand-delivered to: The Returning Officer, NSW Aboriginal Land Council Election, Level 25, 201 Kent Street, SYDNEY 2000. Postal vote applications are available for download from the NSWALC website (www.alc.org.au) or the NSW Electoral Commission’s website (www.elections.nsw.gov.au).
