NSWALC WELCOMES APOLOGY
The New South Wales Aboriginal Land Council welcomes the Rudd Government’s decision to extend an apology to members of the Stolen Generations as the first item of business on the first day of the new parliament with the support, albeit qualified, of the Federal Opposition.
It is a time, hopefully, for the true and tragic experiences of members of the stolen generations and their families to take their rightful prominence at the centre of public consciousness in this country through the national parliament and the mainstream media.
We would respectfully suggest all Australians take time this week to reflect on how the trauma of removal policies have affected so many families and those dear to them.
It is equally important at this time to remember those many people who waited for this day but are no longer with us.
It is a time for respect, compassion and acknowledgement of the past and the impact of what has happened to many people.
Hopefully events this week will assist all of us in a common understanding of the experiences and circumstances which have contributed to the unacceptable circumstances in which many Aboriginal Australians still live.
A national apology is a first step; the opening of a door to a better Australia.
