NSW Aboriginal Land Council reaffirms support for Yabun

The NSW Aboriginal Land Council (NSWALC) has reaffirmed its support for the Yabun Festival by committing $10,000 towards next year's Survival Day event.

NSWALC Chair Roy Ah-See said the annual Yabun Festival - held in Sydney's Victoria Park on Survival Day - was one of the largest Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural events.

NSWALC will also support Saltwater Freshwater, which will be held at Coffs Harbour on Survival Day.

"Yabun celebrates survival, diversity and pride - it's a great celebration of the mob. Yabun is also a great opportunity for non-Aboriginal people to celebrate the oldest culture in the world.

This year's event marks the 15^th anniversary of the Festival.

"Last year more than 15,000 people attended Yabun, taking in activities including concerts, art, children's activities and the popular Corroboree Ground.

"Yabun is one way the NSW Aboriginal Land Council can inform people about the history and achievements of the Land Rights network in New South Wales and to encourage Aboriginal people to have their say by becoming a member of a Local Aboriginal Land Council."

Cr Ah-See said the Kevin Cook Lecture - named in honour of NSWALC's first elected Chair - also encouraged healthy debate on a range of issues affecting Aboriginal communities in New South Wales.
